Nelson Fire and Rescue needed the jaws of life to release a driver from his crushed vehicle after it was struck on Front Street, Oct 2.
Witnesses saw the oncoming vehicle loose control and collide with the other at a high speed, according to a police press release.
"The late model vehicle looked like it was hit by a train," the release said.
The impact threw a 20-year-old male passenger from the back seat about 13 metres through the back window. He and the other two occupants of the car were taken to Kootenay Lake Hospital and later released with minor injuries.
The 28-year-old male driver of the other vehicle received a 24-hour license suspension for driving without due care. He had a clean driving record prior to the incident.
The provincial highway was closed for several hours in one direction while a large amount of debris was cleared and collision analysts investigated the scene.
Police believe alcohol may have been a factor in the crash.
Earlier in the weekend, two pedestrians were struck at an intersection while they were crossing Baker Street on Friday, Oct. 2 around 1 p.m.
While it was a low-speed impact, both were transported to Kootenay Lake Hospital. They were later released with minor injuries.
"Police are reminding the public to be vigilant and exercise extreme caution when approaching a crosswalk in their vehicles," a police press release stated.
