Oysters, authors and ales coming out of shell
The popular literary event Oysters Authors and Ale returns to Nelson this Friday, Nov. 6.
Hosted by the Nelson Library, the event was so popular at its inception last February that it has already outgrown its original location.
“We had over 150 show up when we hosted it at the Rod and Gun Club. It was so packed it was hard to move around,” recalled Nelson’s chief librarian June Stockdale.
This time, the event is at the Mary Hall at Selkirk College. It’s been moved to November to allow the Selkirk students to participate in the event. The Resort and Hotel Management students will set up the room and help serve the hors d’œuvre and make their famous dessert trays. As well, the Selkirk Jazz band, with special guest Don Macdonald, will provide the music.
“Our goal is really to bring the community together to celebrate literacy, as well as all the wonderful talent we see here,” said Stockdale.
The Nelson Brewing Company will be there handing out sample glasses of their local ales, and Brent the Oyster Man will make the oysters.
But the real stars of the evening will be the authors. Each will give 10 minute readings from their books and then be at their book tables throughout the event.
Featured writers include winners of the Nelson and District Arts Council 2008 Literary Competition Eli Bukowski and Sarah Butler, as well as authors Olindo Chiocca, Anne DeGrace, F. Paul Markin, Almeda Glenn Miller, and Holley Rubinsky.
There will be a limited number of tickets to the event available for sale at the door, though the library is encouraging people buy in advance so they can let the chefs know how many people to prepare for.
Tickets are $45 per person, with $20 of that going directly to the library’s new Learning Place that helps tutor people who struggle with literacy (you’ll get a charitable donation receipt for that portion). Buy tickets at Otter Books or the library.
