A couple clicks of your mouse could help a Nelson band break into the international music scene.

The Wassabi Collective is in the running for a grand prize of $150,000 in the PEAK Performers of the Year contest. That’s enough to really get the band off the ground, according to Wassabi frontwoman Melissa Meretsky.

“We could use it to tour the world,” said Meretsky. “It’s what we need to take our band to the next level.”

The band has already done well to make it into the rankings as a top-20 finalist. All the finalists took part in a one-week intensive band bootcamp in the summer, where they were schooled in aspects of the music business, including live performance, songwriting, marketing and promotion.

As one of the exercises in the camp, all the artists had to write and record a song based on the title “In A Minute.” The original songs that came out of that exercise are available to download for free after you vote for your favourite band on the PEAK website.

“We really need all the help we can get to get our votes up,” said Jimmy Lewis, who plays drums for Wassabi. “We’re competing against bands from Vancouver and other big cities. I think it would be great for a little band from Nelson to win.”

Currently Wassabi is lagging behind in the voting, with only about 700 votes logged for them. The leading band has more than 2,000 votes.

To help Wassabi catch up, visit PeakPerformanceProject.com and click on “vote now.”

You can only vote once per address. Voting closes November 30.
