Firm cements eco-reputation

Honoured — Selkirk Paving, based in Genelle, has been recognized for being environmentally conscious, thanks in part to their new asphalt plant that gives off less steam and fumes.
A West Kootenay paving company recently earned national recognition for its efforts to be more eco-friendly in business.
Selkirk Paving, located in Genelle B.C., was awarded the Diamond Achievement Commendation for Excellence in Hot-Mix Plant/Site Operations from the National Asphalt Paving Association (NAPA).
“The Diamond Achievement Commendation is an honour in which a company and a community can take great pride,” NAPA chair James Weeks wrote in a statement announcing the award winner. “It clearly demonstrates a corporate commitment to excellence.”
According to Selkirk Paving’s operations manager Tony Maida, the company stood out because it has a new state-of-the-art asphalt plant where their product is created and recycled.
The plant has a number of energy reducing features.
Selkirk Paving also uses a new line of Warm Mix asphalt, which has been used on roads in Nelson and Rossland.
The asphalt takes less energy to create and puts off less steam and fumes when it’s put down for roads.
“We believe it’s really important to do what we can to reduce the amount of pollution we create,” said Maida.
“We’re a local company, and we know that people in this area are concerned for the environment.
“Eventually everybody is going to have to shift their practices to reduce their carbon, and we want to lead the way.”
Selkirk Paving employs 80 people and works around the West Kootenay.
