Red Deer score twice late in the second period to go up 3-2 over Ice

Kootenay and Red Deer head into the second period tied at 1-1.

Ice buzzing around Rebel net at start of the second period. Lots of chances but no scores.

Petr Senkerik gets a nice shot from the point, which bounces around the front of the Red Deer goalie but again the Ice are turned away.

Red Deer's Colin Archer steals the puck from King but Senkerik steals it back to prevent a Rebel breakaway.

Kootenay captain Dustin Sylvester scores on a breakway as he slides it under the pads of Barnstable to put the Ice up 2-1. Sylvester's goal, his second of the game, was on the powerplay.

Seconds later a scrum breaks out in the Rebel end. Ice's Drew Czerwonka drops Rebel forward Alex Petrovic with a solid haymaker in a short fight.

Andrej Kudrna gets a breakaway chance for Red Deer, but doesn't get much on the shot. Mathews easily turns it away.

Ice on penalty kill. Rebel defenceman Nathan Green puts the shot from the point on the net, but Mathews stops the deflection from the always dangerous Willie Coetzee, the fifth leading scorer in the WHL.

On a nice defensive play on the penalty kill, Senkerik stops the shot from Rebel d-man Cullen Morin

Mathews makes another strong save, this time with his face mask on a shot from Kudrna.

Rebel winger Brett Ferguson shoots on Mathews from in close; the puck bounced off the Ice goalie's chest pad and over his shoulder. Willie Coetzee, with his second of the game, knocks the puck into the wide open net behind Mathews to tie the game for Red Deer.

Sylvester gets a chance for the hat trick as he slips past the Rebel defenders, but Barnstable makes the stop.

Steele Boomer gets chance in close on Joey Leach's rebound for Ice but Barnstable stable again.

Red Deer gets the go ahead goal at 16:16 of the second period on a soft shot from Ferguson that dribbles past Mathews.

Boomer misses the corner by inches on a solid slapshot as the Ice try to get the tying goal before the end of the second stanza.

Red Deer d-man Alex Petrovic makes a strong play as he breaks up a two on on with Sylvester and Boomer.

Reinhart almost knocks the puck in his own goal off his skate. But the biscuit slides wide.

Red Deer takes a 3-2 lead into the change room at the end of the second period.
