Ice snap losing string with weekend wins

On a halloween weekend, the Kootenay Ice got two treats with home wins over Brandon and Seattle.

On Friday, the Ice outlasted Brandon 2-1 with Dustin Sylvester scoring the game winner with 2:13 left in the third period. The Ice captain made a nifty move and zipped the puck past Wheat King netminder Jacob DeSerras for the win. Sylvester's goal was on the power play, and was assisted by Hayden Rintoul and Steele Boomer.

Earlier, Boomer scored for the Ice late in the first period to put Kootenay up 1-0. Aaron Lewadniuk scored Brandon's only goal, an impressive snap shot from on his knees.

On Sunday, Seattle was in town and fell 1-0 to the Ice. Jesse Ismond picked up the game winning goal on a nice centering pass from Dominick Pacovsky.

"Pacovsky got the puck and made a nice pass," said Ismond. "I got it off as quick as I could. Pickard [Thunderbird goalie] had played well all night. It was good to get that one on him and win the game."

Ismond was impressed with the goaltending from Seattle's Calvin Pickard, who turned away 33 out of 34 shots. Also impressive was Kootenay's goalie Todd Mathews, who picked the first all-star with the shut-out.

"It was a battle of the goalies. Both played awesome," said Ismond. "Pickard's known as a world class goaltender now. Put the puck on the net and good things happen."

Ice defenceman Brayden McNabb went down with a knee injury in the middle of the second period. McNabb will be out 4-6 weeks with a knee injury.

"When it rains it pours," said Ice coach Mark Holick, about the team's injury woes. "That's just the way it is. They [Seattle] were banged up too. I don't know how exciting it was at 0-0. But there was some nice plays and good goaltending. We'll take it and run."

After starting the five game home stand 0-3, the Ice were fortunate to pick up the two wins and climb out of the Central division basement with a 7-11 record.

"We're not a fancy team," said Holick. "We're just trying to get the puck to the net. I have a funny feeling we'll have a few of those 1-0, 2-1 games. We're not getting the offensive output we'd like. We're going to have to keep doing the simple things to score."
