Mount Baker juniors win local volleyball tourney

Laurie School was the place for volleyball action on the weekend as they hosted 12 junior boys and girls teams. Mount Baker came out on top on both sides with the boys beating Jaffray 2-1 in the boys final and the girls beating Sparwood 2-1 on the girls side.

"The tournament went really well," said Heather Petterson, coach of Laurie girls and tournament organizer. "Laurie's did pretty well. It's tough for straight grade nine team playing against grade tens. It makes it tough but the girls are sure improving. The boys have had some close games but haven't been able to get those last few points to get on top."

In the girls division, Selkirk of Kimberley placed third with a 2-2 record. Laurie and Parkland tied for fourth.

On the boys side, Prince Charles of Creston picked up bronze with a 3-3 record. Sparwood, Selkirk and Laurie all tied for fourth with a 2-4 record, while Parkland finished seventh at 1-5.

The College of the Rockies volleyball team were also in action. The Avalanche travelled to the coast to play league action against Capilano University. Unfortunately, both teams were swept by their North Vancouver hosts in straight sets on both Friday and Saturday.

The Avs are at home Nov. 13 for games against the Vancouver Island University Mariners from Nanaimo. Both visiting Mariner teams are very strong and will be another tough test for the Avalanche.
