Mount Baker's soccer pitch was the location for the last tournament of the year for East Kootenay senior boys' teams. For the teams, it was their last chance to gear up for the play-offs.
The overall winner was L.V. Rogers from Nelson, who finished with three wins and a tie. Mount Baker finished second, with two wins and two ties. Selkirk Secondary of Kimberley had a strong weekend as well, finishing third and tying Mount Baker 1-1 on Saturday.
"It was a pretty even match," said Jeff Bates, coach of Selkirk. "It wasn't our best game as far as passing goes but we're improving."
It was the second tie for Kimberley against Mount Baker, after three losses. The Storm thought they had the game won with a goal with less than five minutes left in the game, but the goal was called back as offside.
In their other games, Selkirk beat Prince Charles of Creston 3-1, lost to Nelson 6-1 and beat David Thompson of Invermere 4-0.
This weekend, the top AA schools in the East Kootenay travel to Fernie for the play-offs. The top two teams qualify for provincials.
"Fernie and Golden will be the toughest opposition there," said Bates. "We've beaten both already this year. We've been quite strong against AA competition so far this year. We're looking forward to the East Kootenays."
Mount Baker had wins over Invermere 6-1 and Creston 2-0. Their ties came against Nelson 0-0 and the aforementioned Selkirk game.
"We had a good weekend overall," said Brett Oddy, coach of Mount Baker. "We had a good game in the morning against Nelson, but then kind of lost focus. We came out a little flat-footed against Kimberley."
Mount Baker has to travel to Nelson this weekend for a one game play-off to determine who represents the Kootenays at the AAA provincial championships.
"We're getting better. We're coming on," said Oddy. "We had a good game against Nelson this morning. A good feeler. 0-0. The first half was pretty even. Second half they dictated the play a bit more than I would have liked but nothing scary. They didn't get many scoring opportunities."
AAA boys provincials go from Nov. 26-28 in Burnaby.
