Amy Woodland Elementary School had a well attended birthday celebration on Wednesday, October 1, recognizing the school's 50th anniversary. All the current students were in attendance with many of them dressed in 1950's attire similar to that worn back when the school first opened in 1958.
Also in attendance were many past principals, teachers and students. There were several speeches from former principals including Amy Woodland's first principal, Steve Bahrey, who overlooked the school from 1958 to 1983.
Other speakers included Chief Sophie Pierre, who gave the Ktunaxa greeting, and Jack Walkley, school board trustee and former student.
Between speeches several current Amy Woodland students performed songs from the era such as "Rock around the Clock" and "Purple People Eater". The evening featured an open house as well as a barbecue and a slide show.
The celebration culminated with the opening of a time capsule from 1985. The time capsule contained newspapers from the day which had stories about then premier Bill Vanderzalm. The capsule also had some student works, a floppy disk, a rubik's cube, and a 34 cent stamp.
Amy Woodland teacher and master of ceremonies Murray Knipfel enjoyed the action packed day: "It's important for students to meet and see retired staff that come out to share their stories."
