Abbott defends post as MP

It looks like Canada will once again be governed by a Conservative minority government as numbers are verified from polls across the country. In the riding of Kootenay-Columbia Jim Abbott will once more return to the House of Commons as MP.

With 125 out of 210 polling stations across the region reporting their results about two hours after the polls closed at 8 pm, Abbott had already jumped to a substantial lead last night. In the end, he recorded 23,398 votes (59.6 per cent) with the next candidate, Leon Pendleton from the NDP coming in at 8,892 votes (22.6 per cent). Third place went to Green candidate Ralph Moore with a bit more than 3,933 votes (10 per cent) and Liberal candidate Betty Aitchison came in fourth with 3,044 votes (7.8 per cent).

The voter turnout was only recorded at 60.5 per cent, just above the national average of 59.1 per cent. For more election data, go to www.elections.ca.
