Following a recommendation by the Cranbrook In Motion committee and subsequent approval by City council earlier this year , members of Public Works have completed the installation of a set of flashing yellow pedestrian crossing lights, on Victoria Avenue at 4th Street on a one-year trial basis. The system began operating on Tuesday, to allow pedestrians to push a button to activate the flashing lights, in order to safely cross Victoria Avenue. The new pedestrian crossing light system is beginning to appear more and more across Western Canada, especially in the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island. The system has been in extensive use through Eastern Canada for a number of years. The concept is designed to draw attention to pedestrian crossings on busy streets making them much safer for public use. However, there have been a few early reports of drivers completely ignoring the lights and driving right through the intersection.
Members of the driving public are reminded that if those yellow lights are flashing, there is someone wanting to cross the street and you need to stop. The City will continue to monitor the intersection over the next twelve months to determine if the system is proving successful, which could potentially lead to more of these kinds of systems being installed.
