The Creston Valley Hospital recently received a portable ultrasound machine, which was obtained through the help of a public fundraising campaign last year.
"The arrival of the portable ultrasound allows our physicians to make more timely decisions," said Dr. Atma Persad, Chief of Staff for the hospital. "This type of equipment for rural care is a tremendous step forward. It's a very exciting addition to our hospital."
The money for the $60,000 machine was raised through the East Kootenay Foundation of Health through various donations.
"It's a wonderful thing," said Donna Grainger, executive director for the foundation. "The ultrasound allows doctors to make decisions in trauma cases much quicker. It also helps with needling processing, by allowing staff to see veins."
The hospital has had the ultrasound machine for three weeks, with the first week being a training week for the staff.
"All physicians have been trained already using the ultrasound," said Grainger. "It's been in use now for two weeks."
