Arena upgrades one step closer

Eddie Mountain Memorial Arena is one step closer to a renovation. In a vote at the last meeting of the board of directors of the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK), board members supported upgrades for the Invermere arena.

The $840,000 project will include replacement of the ice surface and a wheelchair lift to the upstairs viewing area.

Of the total cost, $100,000 will be provided by the RDEK, $150,000 by the Columbia Valley Recreation Centre Society and $375,000 by the provincial Towns for Tomorrow grant. The project is now awaiting approval of a federal grant that was applied for through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada program.

Should this application not be approved, the remaining $215,000 may have to be found through additional reserve funds or borrowing.

With the decision earlier in the month, the project will now be put on the 2010 to 2014 RDEK financial plan.
