DTSS soccer teams in tough at tourney

The Under-18 team lost two of their games 2-1 against Golden and 2-1 against Creston, before winning their final game 3-3 in a penalty shot shoot-out against Fernie.

“The two games we lost we controlled the play,” coach Scott Sauermann said.

“We were the better team but we just couldn’t find the back of the net.”

James Rose, Adam El Wakeel, Ryan Wagner and Under-13 player Robert-Ty Rice were among the goal scorers in the three games.

Tyson McCarthy, Matt Larrabee, El Wakeel and Jarred Livingston scored four of the five penalty shots to win the final game. Goalkeeper Mitchell Elliott was also among those praised by Sauermann, who saved two game-decider shots during the shoot-out.

The loss of player Dylan Collins from a broken leg during the last tournament in Creston on Sept. 27, was felt by the team.

“He was a key player and he was a senior player so it hurt the team a bit in regards to leadership on the field, but the boys definitely regrouped and tried to move on.”

The U13 team also didn’t fair as well as they would have liked, losing all three of their games, 4-1 against Kimberley, 4-3 against Creston and 5-1 against Golden.

Coach Jurgen Striegel said one of the main reasons the boys didn’t play as well was because they were missing some of their key players.

“We didn’t have enough players,” he said.

“Both teams were very short and the juniors are always going up to play for the seniors.

"They have to play up so that means we miss most of our strong players.”

When all players are present however, he said the DTSS team is one of the strongest teams in the competition.

“The best team is Golden and they’re the team to beat in the championships,” he said.

“But we’re also a strong team, and when we have all our players we’re one of the best teams.”

Regardless of this both coaches are happy with how their teams played.

“We have a great defence and mid field,” Sauermann said.

“They tackle strong and our midfield control the play and distribute the ball with speed, and we have great hustle on defence as well, so that resulted in the key points of the games.”
