RHS trail receives award

Sinclair Creek - A Stream Through Time was honoured by Interpretation Canada with a silver medal in their 2008 Awards of Excellence.

The silver-medal project begins just west of Hwy. 93/95 and continues on a leisurely two kilometre walk all the way to the sawmill with four access points along the way.

It was one of the first projects that the Columbia River Greenways got involved with and began as a joint effort with the Village of Radium Hot Springs (RHS) as habitat restoration for fish. It includes resting areas and shaded areas for fish as they make their way through the stream. The pools that were created along the way act as a fish ladder of sorts that fish can use to make their way upstream to spawn.

Signs along the path tell the history of the area and its connection to local flora and fauna. But as with most Greenways projects, the wildlife is the focus and, according to Ross MacDonald, chair of the Columbia River Greenways Alliance, the area has been a regular destination for a wide variety of animals.

“It’s amazing the amount of wildlife that you see there. The trail is quite high so you’re near treetop level,” said MacDonald, who also said that there are a variety of woodpeckers that can be seen there. “We had some fish in there in the second year the work had been done and we had a beaver dam that went downstream,” he added.

“The comments that come into the Visitor Centre are phenomenal,” said Doug McIntosh of the RHS Chamber of Commerce, who added that discussions will be held this week to find out how the village will commemorate the award.
