After years of negotiations, Canal Flats is a step closer to taking over control of the Beach Park.

The park, officially called the Canal Flats Provincial Park, has been the subject of discussion for some time but recently, during the Union of B.C. Municipalities convention in Victoria, mayor Bruce Woodbury, Coun. Michael McDonald and Coun.

Ute Juras met with the Minister of Environment to discuss Bill 10. The bill provides for transfer of ownership of the park over to the Village of Canal Flats and is being brought before the provincial legislature for a First Reading during the fall sitting.

In the meantime, however, a Land Tenure application has been requested from the province before it can go ahead.

Village council is positive that the final transfer is now in reaching distance and talk has shifted to a possible name change for the park as “provincial park” will no longer be relevant.

A suggestion was made during the last council meeting to hold a contest to name the park but no definite plans are yet in place.
