50 years ago: 12-year-old, Jack Wonnacott, may have saved a plane when he rushed into the middle of the road and waved off a pilot who was attempting to land. The pilot was flying with his wife to Vancouver when his Cessna developed engine troubles. Jack signaled the plane off to a landing field where the planes landed shortly after.
45 years ago: It had been 50 years since the start of World War I and on the cover of The Valley Echo was this poem in remembrance. We see them not as gods without a flaw, Nor in the ranks of history’s famous train, But as we knew them on the field of war, Divine but yet not free from human stain, Youthful and Vigorous, strong-limbed, clear of eye, Meeting all danger with song and jest, We saw them singing, going out to die, They who loved life and lived with youth’s own zest.
40 years ago: James Warne of Invermere entered the mayoral race after current mayor M.E. Tunnacliffe announced his retirement at the end of his term. Warne had been an aldermen in the town for three years and lived in Invermere with his wife and five children for the previous seven years.
35 years ago: Officers for the Radium Recreation Commission were elected. The new president was Terry Gibbons with Edward Casey becoming vice-president. Mrs. Michael Machuk won the position of secretary with the final position of treasurer was Ms. Joan Haggerty.
30 years ago: The David Thompson Secondary School boy’s cross country team won the East Kootenay Championship. Richard Thierbach placed first with George Thierbach and Mitch Goodwin coming in fifth and sixth respectively.
25 years ago: A Columbia Valley dating game was held at the Invermere Inn this week. The eligible bachelors were made up of Russell Prichard, Peter Pankovitch and Bobby Stewart who were all trying to win a date with Heather Gardiner.
20 years ago: The Terry Fox flag was awarded to Eileen Madison School for having the most students take part in the charity run this year. In the previous four years the flag had been awarded to J.A. Laird. Eileen Madison set up a running club which they felt encouraged more children to come out for the event.
15 years ago: The Windermere Valley Ski team went Nordic. The club made the decision to expand its membership to be for the competitive skiers but also recreational skiers as well. The club was now able to teach both Alpine and Nordic styles to its members.
10 years ago: The B.C. Ski Team had a Columbia Valley influence. Andrea Lustenberger from Invermere and Elizabeth Richardson of Toby Creek cracked the roster for the team during for the season.
5 years ago: Alicia Riedel won the chance to be Fire Chief for a day at the Windermere Valley Fire Department. She got the chance to spend the day with Fire Chief Jim Miller who showed her what happens at the fire hall on an every day basis.
