Show me the way to the food
Bill Swan, Lin Steedman, Norm Macdonald, Alison Bell and Sarah Bennett. photo submitted A joint project that encompasses 22 locales is giving a glimpse of what kind of food the valley has to offer.
The East Kootenay Local Food Guide, designed by Prose Art in Invermere, is a listing of producers of fruits and vegetables, meat, dairy and other foods like honey products. It covers an area that spans from Creston and Sparwood in the south and Brisco to the north.
“It’s a guide that people can pick up at, say, the Farmers’ Market and if they want to buy any produce locally during the week, they have the contacts to do that,” Lin Steedman of the Community Greenhouse in Invermere.
The project is a result of a partnership between the Columbia Food Action Group (CFAG), the Cranbrook Food Action Committee and the Creston Valley Food Action Coalition.
“If there are any producers that are not in the guide and would like to be in the guide, they can email us,” said Steedman.
Though the group received a few grants to get the guide off the ground, most of the work was done by volunteers. As a result, they know they may have missed some people who may be interested in taking part.
“It’s growing and we’ll probably do one or two updates a year because we know there are some places we did miss.”
As yet, the money has not been found to print it but it is available online for people to download and use.
It can be found at http://proseart.ca/local and they are always interested in people who would like to take part or information about grant money to put it to print.
