Effective immediately all West Kootenay Minor Hockey arenas are a yellow card zone.

Kathleen Zubick, president of the Castlegar Minor Hockey League said that those who act inappropriately will receive a card reminding them to mind their Ps and Qs.

“This is a gentle reminder. Sometimes people just forget,” said Zubick.

If an official decides you are acting inappropriately, he or she will issue you a yellow card.

On that yellow card it says that inappropriate actions could be yelling at players, coaches or officials, or other such actions which might be deemed inappropriate by the person handing out the cards.

It says: Please consider the example you are setting for our children. The West Kootenay Minor Hockey Association and its member associations ask that you provide a better example for our children. It continues: If you are unable to curb your behaviour, then please leave the premises immediately. Any recurrence of your behaviour will result in a complaint to the West Kootenay Minor Hockey Association and your local member association’s discipline committee.

Zubick said the new policy is in keeping with other leagues within the division.

“We did this so we could be consistent in the West Kootenay Division and it’s been done on an individual basis,” explained Zubick.

Zubick added that Trail has had such a policy for a while and the success of that policy spurred Castlegar Minor Hockey to adapt a policy of their own.

“They reported back to us, and it seemed like a good thing so we decided to do it as well.”
