Restoration of the historic Brilliant Bridge is one step closer to completion.

The contract for the restoration of the bridge was awarded last week to a Calgary company.

Jim Crockett, manager of recreation for Castlegar and District Recreation Department, said the $1,109,000 project was awarded to ConCreate USL Ltd.

"We are in the process of signing the agreement and just getting all the bonding information," said Crockett.

After all the Ts are crossed and the I's dotted, it's expect that prep work could begin as early as mid-September with completion within the next 120 days, dependent on the weather.

"Winter is going to be our issue right now. We are hoping that winter holds off."

One of the first things ConCreate will do, said Crockett, is encase the bridge, which was built in 1913, to prevent any debris from falling into the water.

Crockett pointed out that finally reaching this point of restoration is directly related to the vision and hard work of numerous people who believed the suspended bridge was worthy of restoration and a place in history.

"This comes after a lot of work for a lot of people for a lot of years. The volunteers can feel proud of their efforts."

Crockett said the restoration group is still hoping to receive further grants so they might then add interpretive signs, benches and lighting to further showcase the restored bridge.

There were seven bids in total, two of which were local.
