BC Hydro has not yet decided whether or not the roadway across Hugh Keenleyside Dam will stay open for public use in the future, according to Stakeholder Engagement Advisor of Corporate Communications Amy Jonsson.
Currently the road is closed as crews complete navigation lock debris clean up, said Jonsson.
She said the road will be reopened again soon and the public will be notified through the media. It will be closed again in October as crews will be doing annual general maintenance on the road.
“In order to reopen the road public safety management requirements have to be met,” Jonsson said. “Requirements include installing speed bumps along the roadway and relocating the backup emergency generator to a safe location.”
Jonsson said BC Hydro is thinking of permanently closing the roadway for safety issues.
“There are concerns for the security of the facility, but at this time no decision has been made,” Jonsson reiterated.
She said BC Hydro is looking at different options to keep the road open to the public including opening it during day light hours only or creating security passes.
