Castlegar’s Audrey Maxwell Polovnikoff is tying up her laces on her runners and preparing for what might just be one of the most memorable runs of her life.
Polovnikoff is one of the local people chosen to carry the Olympic torch when it comes into Castlegar Jan. 24.
“It’s a real honour to play even such a small part in celebrating our athletes and the commitment they make and the sacrifices they make,” said Polovnikoff.
Polovnikoff said she entered her name at the Royal Bank and Icoke websites to carry the torch, but never thought her name would be picked out of the thousands of entries.
“I’m really excited. I was quite surprised,” Polovnikoff said.
Polovnikoff jokingly said that besides being surprised, her first thought was, “Please don’t fall.”
Polovnikoff, who recently took up running, said she has the choice to either walk or run the relay.
“I’ll be running. It will only be about 300 metres,” explained Polovnikoff.
Not only will she be running, but she will be running in Olympic style.
“When they contacted me they asked me the size of my outfit,” Polovnikoff said.
Besides undergoing a criminal check, Polovnikoff and the other runners will attend an orientation meeting the day prior to the run.
