On November 5, 6 and 7 the NSS senior boys soccer team competed in the 16-team provincial boys A tier soccer championships in Abbotsford.

The tournament field consisted of nine private schools and seven public schools from all areas of the province. The 16 teams were divided into four pools with Nakusp ending up in a group with the defending B.C. champions and host team from St. John Brebeuf of Abbotsford, West Point Grey Academy from Vancouver who were the bronze medallists from last year and A. L. Fortune from Enderby.

In their first game Nakusp played the West Point Grey team. NSS dominated the first half with the advantage of a strong wind and had numerous scoring chances, but were unable to score on the Vancouver team. In the second half the game was more even with end to end play until a West Point Grey forward curled in a shot from 20 yards out to take a 1-0 lead with 10 minutes left in the game. Nakusp put on the pressure for the remainder of the game but were unable to equalize and lost 1-0. Taylor Reitmeier was named player of the game for Nakusp.

Nakusp then faced the defending B.C. champions from St. John Brebeuf on their home field in front of 350 noisy Brebeuf fans. The game was very even with both teams playing a tight defensive style and limiting scoring opportunities. The game ended in a scoreless draw and Nathan Wiebe made a couple of key saves for Nakusp to earn player of the game honours.

In their third game NSS faced A. L. Fortune from Enderby. Once again the weather had an impact as the wind and rain made it difficult to control the ball and the playing surface was very slippery and muddy in places. Nakusp opened the scoring with a goal in the first half by Terryn Stenseth and applied pressure to the Enderby net throughout the game. NSS finally put the game away with two late goals by Jade Streliev and Taylor Reitmeier for a 3-0 victory. Brody Simpson played a strong game at the outside halfback position for NSS and won the player of the game award.

With their one win, one tie and one loss record, NSS placed second in their pool. This put Nakusp into a grouping with the second place teams from the other pools to determine the 5th-8th place spots in the tournament. Nakusp faced Highroad Academy from Chilliwack in their fourth game. NSS came out with a physical style against the smaller Chilliwack team and Yuki Miwa scored an early goal to put NSS in the lead. Despite numerous chances to put the game away, Nakusp failed to add any more goals and Highroad tied the game off a goal-mouth scramble late in the second half. The overtime session failed to solve anything and the game was decided in a shootout. Nathan Wiebe made three saves in the shootout and NSS converted on three of their first four shots to win the game. Garrett Bowman played a strong game in midfield for Nakusp and won the player of the game award.

In their last game Nakusp played the Fraser Valley zone champions from Langley Christian. Nakusp continued their physical style of play and had most of the play in the Langley end but failed to convert on their scoring chances. Late in the first half Langley was awarded a free kick just outside of the NSS penalty area and scored after a scramble in the muddy goal mouth. In the second half NSS continued to apply the pressure and were awarded a penalty shot when an NSS player was tripped in the Langley penalty area. Yuki Miwa converted the penalty shot to tie the game. Nakusp continued to press but were unable to score, so the game went to overtime. Early in the first overtime session Terryn Stenseth finally converted on one of his scoring chances to put NSS in the lead and the Nakusp team held on for a 2-1 victory. Terryn Stenseth was named player of the game for Nakusp.

Nakusp ended up in fifth place in the tournament. NSS was awarded the fair play award as the most sportmanslike team. The tournament was dominated once again by the private schools with Glenlyon from Victoria defeating Bodwell College of Vancouver 1-0 in the championship game. West Point Grey edged St. Ann’s Academy 1-0 for the bronze medal. Nakusp for the second year in a row had the best finish out of the public schools in the province in the A tier. NSS was the only public school to finish in the top nine teams at this year’s tournament which was a strong result considering NSS was the smallest public school competing in the tournament. Rossland also represented the Kootenay zone and finished in 12th place.
