The NSS black team, consisting of players from grades 10 to 12 finished third in their home tournament over the weekend while the green team of grade 8 and 9 players finished 8th after a heartbreaking loss in their final game.
The black team was 2-1 and set to play Kimberley for the third spot when the team from Kimberley announced that they were forfeiting the game and heading home early.
The green team lost versus Rossland, Kimberley and Grand Forks before heading into their final match versus Fort St. James. The match was tied one apiece at the half and remained that way until the last minute of the game when Fort St. James put one in the net to take the victory.
Coach Rod Morrison said the team had nothing to be ashamed of, running hard, playing well and holding their own the whole match despite being dwarfed by the much larger senior squad.
The final between Mt. Baker and Osoyoos was a rough affair with the two big teams each dishing out very physical challenges. The referee was seen warning the coaches after protests over hard challenges.
Mt. Baker prevailed 2-1 to win the tournament.
The weekend games were well attended and well worth it.
Those who missed the matches will have another chance to take in the entertaining games when the Kootenay Single A playoffs come to Nakusp on May 20.
Morrison says they’ll be selecting the best players from the green and black teams for the playoff tournament, which will see the top two teams advance to the provincial finals.
Also this week, the junior girls will host a all-day play day at NSS this Thursday, May 8.
Final results are: 1. Mt Baker (Cranbrook) 2. Osoyoos 3. Nakusp (Black) 4. Kimberley 5. Grand Forks 6. Mt. Sentinel 7. Fort St. James 8. Nakusp (Green)
