NANAIMO -- Harmac mill workers are on edge again after a purchase agreement between Asia Pulp and Paper and Pope and Talbot failed to be completed before its Wednesday deadline.

“Everybody’s nervous again but my understanding is they’re all still being paid,” said Arnie Bercov, vice-president for the Pulp, Paper and Woodworkers Union Local 8.

“This is what the company told me – that negotiations are still ongoing, so there is still hope, but it is unsettling.”

Bercov said he understands the two companies will be back in court on May 5 to try and reach a deal.

Asia Pulp and Paper had a court order to take possession of the struggling mill by midnight on April 30 after an April 4 deadline was postponed.
