Remembrance Day is a time to remember; a time to get involved
Two minutes of silence barely seems enough.
This year, as every year, the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #20, Nakusp, will parade to the Cenotaph in the Nakusp park on Nov. 11 to honour those who have made sacrifices serving in the Canadian Forces.
Local branch president Renee Bruneau says Remembrance Day is the yearly top priority for the Nakusp Legion, who lead the ceremonies to the Cenotaph and back to the Legion hall, where there will be a congregation of those involved.
Bruneau says a lot of older, long-time residents tend to attend the ceremonies and the initiative this year (as in previous years) is to draw in a younger crowd and to enlighten and inform them of the importance of Remembrance Day.
Poppy Campaign co-ordinator and Legion member Cheryl Truax, who also handles the essay and drawing competitions in Nakusp schools, says last year there were 150 entries of essays and drawings from Nakusp Elementary and Nakusp Secondary. Some of these essays and drawings will be on the walls at the Legion hall for participants in the day’s ceremonies to gaze when the parade is led back to the hall.
As for poppies, Truax says last year the campaign raised over $6,000, an amount which is distributed quickly to ex-service members and their dependants as well as other organizations who support service-members and the elderly.
“(People of Nakusp) were very generous last year, and the year before,” says Truax. “From a small community they’re so generous that I can’t express it enough.”
The parade on Nov. 11 begins at the Legion hall at 10 a.m.
