Edgewood Elementary students, teachers and community volunteers helped plant trees and a garden in the field at the elementary school. “With the help of community volunteer Lou Anne Flintoff, students made two benches that will go inside the horseshoe shape design of the garden,” says teacher Anita Vibe. “With so many people, a great amount of progress was made in one day. The beds in front of the school were weeded and extra plants from the garden were planted there.” Vibe says the project could not have been completed without the help of the CBT through the Community Initiatives program, the province for funding through Trees for Tomorrow, the Southern Zone PAC for fundraising efforts and the many volunteers and donations. “The Edgewood Community Learning Garden is open to all community members to enjoy and for the school to use for its many educational benefits.

Children are invited to “Follow The Reader” this summer at Nakusp Public Library! Children can participate in this free program by signing up for the 2009 Summer Reading Club starting now.

Children of all ages can join this summer-long program and receive a free reading log and bookmark to start them on their celebration. The reading log is a fun way to keep track of each week of reading and the books that children read throughout the summer. Each child can receive stickers and great prizes. At the end of the summer, all Readers who complete their reading log and all seven weeks of reading will be eligible to receive a special Summer Reading Club medal in recognition of their achievement.

Nakusp Public Library is offering a very exciting program this year — Reader’s Theatre for children aged 8 – 13. Christina Nolan will offer this drop-in program (registration not necessary) on Mondays and Fridays 11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., beginning Monday, July 20. This is a fun literacy program -- no props or staging needed and no memorization required. The participants read (with expression and feeling encouraged) from prepared scripts. Reader’s Theatre develops fluency and comprehension in a non-threatening atmosphere. This program made possible by a grant from Healthy Families of Nakusp.

The Summer Reading Club is an exciting and educational province-wide program that encourages children to read over the summer holidays and to maintain and develop the literacy skills that they acquired during the school year. Studies show that voluntary reading is the number one factor in establishing good reading habits in children. This is best accomplished when children get to choose their own books in a reading environment like the public library where there are a wide variety of books available to them. The Summer Reading Club reaches over 85,000 children in British Columbia every summer and is sponsored by the British Columbia Library Association with funding assistance from the Public Library Services Branch, Ministry of Education.
