On Sunday, Quebec’s Stephanie Dubois became the first Canadian to win the Odlum Brown VanOpen women’s singles title. The second-seed overcame a slow start to defeat top-seed Sania Mirza of India 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the championship match at Hollyburn Country Club. Dubois, 22, was a VanOpen finalist in 2007 falling that year to Britain’s Anne Keothavong. For her victory, Dubois, ranked 129th in the world and the second-highest Canadian singles player, won $11,400 (U.S.). In the final of the men’s event, third seed Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus defeated Belgium’s Xavier Malisse 6-4, 6-4. For Baghdatis, a 2006 Australian Open finalist and Wimbledon semi-finalist, the victory is worth $14,400 U.S. In the men’s doubles final, which was was played indoors due to rain, the South African team of Rik De Voest and Kevin Anderson defeated Ramon Delgado of Paraguay and Kaes Van’t Hof of United States 6-4, 6-4.
