Firemen, police officers do the Grind

More than 300 firemen and police officers from 14 different countries raced up the North Shore's Grouse Grind on Wednesday.

As a part of the 2009 World Police and Fire Games, competitors fought for the fastest speed to the top of the popular mountain trail.

In the end Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue serviceman Robin Bryson won the Men's Master heat with a time of 30:20.

Vancouver Police Department's Astrid Bonter posted the fastest women’s time with 38:26 in the Women’s Open race. The quickest Canadian male was Men’s Open competitor Ryan Ervin of the Vancouver Airport Fire Department with a time of 30:41.

The team challenges saw policewomen from the Vancouver Police Department win the Women’s Open category. Firemen from the Barcelona Fire Service took the Men’s Open division, and the Mixed Open team title stayed on the North Shore with the District of North Vancouver Fire Department.

“We are very proud to have been selected to showcase the Grouse Grind as a unique venue symbolizing Vancouver's outdoor culture and breathtaking scenery," Grouse GM Michael Cameron said in a release.

The World Police and Fire Games run from July 31 to Aug. 9. with 60 sporting events taking place in more than 50 venues. The games, which are held every two years, are open to all full-time professional firefighters, law enforcement, customs and correctional officers from around the world.
