West Van PD says it will hold a disciplinary proceeding for a constable who was convicted of assault for beating a delivery man outside the Vancouver Hyatt in January.
A judge said Griffin Gillan's "actions breached the trust of the public" when he and police academy instructor Jeffrey Klassen allegedly beat and kicked Firoz Khan of Surrey in an unprovoked attack, claiming that Khan was under arrest, after the two off-duty cops went drinking on Granville Street.
Gillan was handed to a three-week conditional sentence requiring him to be home between the hours of 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., followed by six months probation.
West Vancouver police issued a statement Thursday saying it will hold a disciplinary proceeding "where Constable Gillan's future with the WVPD will be reviewed."
Gillan – who had been on the West Van force for 13 months at the time of the assault last January – has been suspended without pay since the charges were laid.
The WVPD will continue a Police Act investigation into the incident, before holding a disciplinary proceeding this fall, said Const. Lisa Wanless in a news release issued Thursday.
"Cst. Gillan has been suspended from duty since the criminal charges were laid, and his suspension status has not changed," wrote Wanless.
