VANOC to close access to Cypress Mountain during Games

The Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC) has announced the second phase of its integrated transportation plan.

At the heart of the plan, VANOC is asking for residents' help to reduce vehicle traffic by 30 per cent in downtown Vancouver, on the Lions Gate and Iron Workers' Memorial bridges, the newly expanded Sea-to-Sky Highway and in Whistler.

While that will reduce cars on the roads, VANOC is also closing several roads in downtown Vancouver starting as early as November.

Drivers who do take to the roads are being encouraged to avoid travelling into downtown Vancouver and up the Sea-to-Sky Highway during peak hours.

That means avoiding travelling into downtown Vancouver between 7 to 9 a.m. and leaving before 2 p.m. or after 7 p.m. For the Sea-to-Sky Highway, VANOC proposes travellers headed northbound start before 6 a.m. or after 6 p.m.

However, those planning to head very far north will face a roadblock north of Squamish near Alice Lake. Those without proper passes will not be able to pass.

On the North Shore, VANOC is closing access to Cypress Mountain and spectators can only travel up by the Olympic bus network. Tickets for the buses can a be purchased starting Nov. 24.

Besides unveiling its plan today, (Oct. 14), VANOC also launched a website, travelsmart2010.ca to provide transportation information for residents.
