A North Vancouver man may owe his life to the quick response of two citizens and a West Vancouver police officer.
Shortly after 4 p.m. on Sunday, emergency crews received a rush of 911 calls reporting a male had been swept down Capilano River, stated a West Vancouver Police Department press release.
Two people who saw the man slip in the river jumped into the water to try and pull the 42-year-old to the riverbank but the rescuers quickly found themselves in danger as they fought the currents.
West Vancouver police dog handler Const. James Hudson, a former lifeguard, arrived shortly after. Hudson swam to the victim, allowing the two citizens to swim to safety on their own. He then pulled the now-unconscious man to the shore.
Emergency crews managed to resuscitate the victim but he remains in critical condition.
Police are investigating whether alcohol was involved in the incident. Callers to police reported the man behaving erratically before he fell into the river, the release stated.
