Coach House impasse

City of North Vancouver council reached an impasse Monday night on its Coach House Guidelines.
While councillors heard several speakers supporting and opposing the guidelines, and debated several key issues during its policy committee meeting, council was unable to make a motion moving forward. With Coun. Craig Keating absent, the five councillors and mayor voted to several ties, until opting to adjourn the meeting. Some key points argued included the need for public and council input on coach house design and construction, size and height of the buildings, and their affordability.
“I don’t think we should go down new roads without public input,” said Coun. Rod Clark.
Mayor Darrell Mussatto called for change that would bring more housing stock to the city and allow low-income earners to live in the city. “If those people are good enough to work in our community, they should be good enough to live in our community,” Mussatto said.
However, it’s not the end of the discussion on coach houses. A councillor can request it be included in a following council meeting for further discussion. Meanwhile, the city is still accepting comments on the guidelines. For more information on the Coach House Guidelines, go to http://www.cnv.org/server.aspx?c=2&i=232.
