The Grouse Mountain Refuge for Endangered Wildlife has asked the District of North Vancouver for land to build a new black bear rehabilitation centre on Fromme Mountain.

On Monday, Ken Macquisten, managing director of the Grouse Mountain Refuge, made a presentation to council asking for the district to contribute land to the 80-acre enclosure.

The plan would include about one-thirds Grouse Mountain Resorts land and two-thirds district land in a remote area up Mountain Highway. Macquisten claimed the area is well away from current mountain biking activities.

Under the plan, Grouse will be contributing staff and other operational resources to the project, while the province has earmarked $400,000 to build it.

Langley’s Critter Care will also be contributing services.

The whole project, Macquisten said, will be overseen by a not-for-profit society.
