After a recent spate of thefts, police are warning vehicle owners to be extra careful about what they leave in automobiles.

"In the majority of these thefts the cars weren't even locked," North Vancouver RCMP Const. Amanda Smith stated in a press release. "Just the very act of locking the doors can often be a deterrent to a hurried thief."

Remove all valuables from a vehicle before locking it, even if you are only going to be parked for a couple of minutes, she added.

Taking possessions from the car and avoiding parking in areas with poor visibility will help prevent thefts, ICBC reports. The corporation also recommends engraving your stereo and other on-board valuables with your driver's licence number.
