A Crown lawyer alleged in court Friday that a West Vancouver man accused of second degree murder made his living from selling illegal drugs.
In his cross examination of Sasan Ansari, Crown counsel Greg Weber was attempting to uncover the source of several deposits of $20 bills. One deposit was a wad of 323 $20 bills.
"This is not from tips, this is not from bribes, this is the result of selling something on a very regular basis," said Weber. "I suggest that what you're selling is illicit substances."
"I disagree with your suggestion," Ansari replied.
Ansari has pleaded not guilty to second degree murder in the May 2006 death of Joshua Goos. He explained that the cash came from tips he received as a doorman at the Odyssey nightclub.
Weber also pressed Ansari over his company Heaven Holdings Ltd. Although Ansari explained that the goal of the company was to buy a downtown liquor license, an online registry described the company as a food commodities trader.
"Mr. Ansari, I'm going to suggest to you that is a compete fabrication," said Weber. "This company was never designed to purchase anything; it was a vehicle for you to be a trader in sugar."
"And I disagree with your suggestion," said Ansari.
Ansari said Goos gave him a $90,000 loan in August and September 2005 to help launch the food commodity side of the business. However, within days of the deposit Ansari transfered the money out of the business account and into his personal account.
A detailed probing of his several bank accounts showed Ansari immediately withdrew $10,000 of the money after it was deposited. Ansari said the $10,000 may have been for a property down payment or a loan to his brother.
"I'm just guessing at this point," he said.
On Thursday Ansari testified that he had no memory of causing the fatal stab wounds that ended Goos' life. Ansari alleged that Goos threatened him over the $90,000 while they sat in a jeep outside the Hollyburn Country Club.
Last week, Ansari signed a statement of fact admitting to causing the fatal stab wounds.
Ansari's defence is expected to continue for more than a week with a series of experts scheduled to testify to his mental state at the time of Goos' death.
