With just hours until the deadline, candidates are scurrying to hand in their nomination papers for next month's District of North Vancouver election.
So far no mayoral challengers have emerged but three newcomers are seeking to secure a spot on council.
Among them are Roger Bassam, a staffer in North Van MP Don Bell's office; John Fair, president of the local chapter of the Vancouver Area Cycling Coalition and John Sharpe, a Safeway clerk.
Both Bassam and Sharpe made failed runs for council in 2005. Bassam earned 4,402 votes and Sharpe garnered 2,593, both were well short of the 5,371 votes that swept Alan Nixon onto council.
Bassam also ran for council in the 2004 byelection but was well behind winner Jim Cuthbert.
Fair, a longtime member of North Van's bicycle advisory committee is making his first run for office. He's already launched his own website at www.johnfair.ca.
These challengers and any others who file their papers by Friday at 4 p.m. will be jostling for at least one spot on council.
Coun. Janice Harris has decided not to run again but the five remaining candidates have all submitted their papers.
