The New Westminster Hyacks senior girls field hockey team went undefeated in league play, but they were no match for Argyle in last Thursday’s Burnaby-North Shore district championship at the Burnaby Lake Sports Complex West.

The Hyacks gave up seven goals in the first half to the powerful Pipers, whose lineup is choc-a-bloc with regional and provincial rep players, en route to a 9-0 loss.

The defeat ends a season that saw the Hyacks win their first league title since 2005. They won all four of their regular season games as well as their two playoff matches, giving up only one goal along the way. Keeper Abuk Duot earned the shutouts, with defensive help from Michelle Murray, Gracie Wardle and Emily Skelton.

Sunny Virk and Ellen Colbourne were the scoring stars from the midfield, while the strong play of rookie forwards Nicolina Dabic and Kelsy Lonergan give the team optimism for next season.

Argyle qualifies for the AAA Provincial Championships, which begin Nov. 12 at the Burnaby Lake Sports Complex West.
