Royals rule at provincials

The Douglas College Royals men’s soccer team wasn’t the most gracious host for the BC College Athletics Association provincial championship final on Sunday. First of all, they made sure the weather at Coquitlam’s Town Centre was its absolute worst, blustery, cold and rainy. Then they won the thing, beating Vancouver Island University Mariners, 2-0.
The victory means the Royals will be packing their bags to head east in hopes of becoming equally disagreeable guests at the Canadian College Athletic Assocation national soccer championships in Toronto beginning Nov. 4. It’s their fourth trip to the finals, which they last won in 2005.
The Royals booked their ticket to the nationals on the toe of midfielder Vito Iacobellis, who scored both his team’s goals in the second half of Sunday’s provincial final. Keeper Gyrish Kaniah got the shutout.
Douglas reached the final by beating Capilano University 3-0 in Friday’s semi-final. Owen Sinclair, Vishal Chand and Mark McQuade scored for the Royals.
Three Royals players also swept the tournament’s individual awards; midfielder Reynold Stewart was named the most valuable player, Kaniah was the best keeper and Lucas Domijan was the best defender.
