Hyacks set for Friday showdown

It’s pretty apparent who the have and have-not senior football teams are in the BC High School AAA Varsity Western Conference. And the next two weeks of conference games will go a long way to solidify those divisions.
The New Westminster Hyacks, Vancouver College Fighting Irish and Notre Dame Jugglers are all undefeated in conference play, beating up on their winless opponents, Earl Marriot, Carson Graham and West Vancouver. The Hyacks and Jugglers are each averaging more than 50 points per game in conference play, while Van College has scored 87 points in two conference games. All three teams are ranked in the top five in the province.
The good times end this weekend though. The top-ranked Hyacks, who are 7-0 in conference and exhibition play, will host the fifth-ranked Jugglers, who’ve lost only once in six games, Friday at Mercer Stadium. And if the Hyacks are to continue their perfect run, they’re going to have to be at the top of their game, said coach Farhan Lalji.
“Our regular season will come down to the next two games,” said Lalji. “Notre Dame and Vancouver College are both outstanding teams and both will be pick-em games. We have to play our best football of the season starting now.”
The Hyacks especially can’t afford another sloppy start like they had against Carson Graham last Friday at Mercer, when they gave up an early touchdown to the Eagles on a nine play, 55-yard drive from the opening kickoff. And while the Hyacks recovered to romp to a 56-17 win, Lalji said he still had cause for concern.
“Overall we were sloppy with our execution on both sides of the ball for the first seven-eight minutes,” said Lalji. But some big plays by individual players bailed the the team out.
None more so though than Vivie Bojilov. The fleet-footed running back returned to the lineup, after missing last week’s game to heal an injury, in a big way, with a 99 yard touchdown run on the Hyacks’ first offensive play. It was the longest touchdown run from scrimmage in school history, surpassing Darnell Sikorski’s 76-yard score against Timberline in 2007.
Bojilov also scored on an 85-yard run late in the first quarter. He finished the game with 182 yards rushing.
Those romps, and another 80 yard score by Warren Reece in the second quarter were huge components of the Hyacks record-setting 549 yards rushing for the game, breaking the previous record of 518 yards they got against Meridian just two weeks ago. In total, 11 Hyacks got the ball.
Reece scored his second touchdown on an 18 yard run to make the score 42-10 at halftime. Brent Fletcher and Rhyan Santos also contributed touchdown runs.
Quarterbacks Torsten Jaccard and Jeremy Davis barely got to loosen their throwing arms, but their 101 yards through the air boosted the Hyacks’ total offense to 650 yards, another school record. Jaccard completed two of three passes for 82 yards, including a 31 yard touchdown strike to Daniel English in the second quarter. Davis threw two completions for 19 yards, including a seven yard pitch to Jeremy Wilson in the end zone.
While the Hyacks’ offensive game is apparently firing on all cylinders, the defense will also have to growl smoothly in the coming conference showdowns. Especially if they’re to contain the Jugglers’ powerful running back Stephen Spagnolo, who exploded for 190 yards and four touchdowns on eight carries in only one quarter of action in Notre Dame’s 54-20 win over Earl Marriot last Friday. In six games this season, he’s rushed for 1,774 yards and 21 touchdowns.
“(He) is a great back,” said Lalji. “It will require everyone on our team to try and contain him, starting with the scout team during the week.”
The Hyacks showdown with the Jugglers starts at 7:30 p.m.
