Atom Hyacks on roll
Updated: October 21, 2009 2:09 PM
The Royal City Hyacks Atom football team got off on the right foot en route to their second straight victory Sunday, 14-8 over the South Delta Rams.
Frank Wang recovered Isaac Hughes’ perfectly placed onside kickoff to start the game, then running back Ethan Van Kalsbeek ran for a 55 yard touchdown on the ensuing drive to give the Hyacks the early advantage. Van Kalsbeek also scored later in the game, a one-yard plunge over the goal line. It was his tenth major in his last five games.
His teammate in the backfield, Phoenix Bourrier, used the effective blocking of his offensive linemen to lead the Hyack’s ground game.

The defense also had a big game, as they held the Rams off the scoreboard until they were finally able to break through the coverage to score with 12 seconds remaining. Defensive end Arjun Bal was awarded the coveted candy bar for landing the game’s biggest “crunch” on an opposing player.
In Peewee play, the Royal City Black team beat their Orange rivals, 38-32. The Black junior bantam team also won, beating the North Delta Longhorns 32-12, while the Orange squad succumbed to the Cloverdale Jaguars, 44-6.
