The B.C. Junior A Lacrosse League final has been a homer series, which isn’t good news, in the long run, for the New Westminster Jr. Salmonbellies since they don’t hold home-floor advantage.
In the short run, however, it was good news Tuesday night at Queen’s Park Arena. The ’Bellies busted out with four goals in the first 4:17 of the third period to break a 4-4 tie before cruising to a 10-6 win over the Coquitlam Adanacs.
The win tied the best-of-seven series 2-2 with the home team winning every game. The fifth game was Wednesday in Coquitlam with Game 6 at Queen’s Park on Friday and, if necessary, a seventh and deciding game in Coquitlam on Sunday.
“Scoring those quick ones kind of set them back and we were able to build on it,” said Salmonbellies general manager Doug Zack on Wednesday morning.
“We knew we had to step up with our A game with as many players as we have injured at this moment.”
Zack said Curtis Dickson, the Salmonbellies second-leading scorer during the regular season, has “an upper body injury” the team is evaluating game by game, although he wasn’t expected to play Wednesday. They lost Eric Lewthwaite, their fourth-leading scorer, to an injury in the same region in Game 3, and T.J. Cowx hurt his ankle stepping on a ball during practice Monday. On top of that, second-leading scorer Tyler Digby won’t be available for the rest of the playoffs because he’s headed to Pittsburgh’s Robert Morris University where he’ll play football and field lacrosse on a scholarship.
But despite all the attention Coquitlam could pay to him because of all the injuries, the Salmonbellies leading scorer Kevin Crowley still managed to score twice and set up another in the third period.
“That speaks volumes for his leadership because when we really needed him he came through,” said Zack.
The victory also spoke volumes, he said, for the depth the Salmonbellies have. Daniel McQuade came through with three goals and two assists, Leif Mydske matched Crowley’s two goals and an assist while Brett Mydske scored twice.
“Daniel McQuade had a whale of game, the last four games he’s played really well,” said Zack.
“I’ll say he’s a late bloomer, because we knew he had it in him. He’s just a special player. He’s not very big, he’s just got a lot of talent and he’s got a real head on his shoulders.”
Coquitlam lost just once during the regular season but have suffered four defeats in nine games during the playoffs.
“They’re a great team, and they’re not going to sit back and just give it away,” Zack said. “We’ve got to work for everything we get.”
• On Sunday in Coquitlam, the A’s downed the Jr. ’Bellies 11-7. McQuade had a six-point night including two goals.
