Goals were being scored like it was a pickup game at an outdoor lacrosse box where the last goal wins. Since the New Westminster Jr. Salmonbellies scored the last four there was no doubt who was the winner at Queen’s Park on Thursday night.
The Jr. ’Bellies downed the Coquitlam Adanacs 16-12 to even up the best-of-seven B.C. Junior A Lacrosse League final 1-1. Game 3 is tomorrow (Sunday) in Coquitlam with the fourth game Tuesday at Queen’s Park and Game 5 back on Adanacs’ home turf Wednesday. All games begin at 8 p.m.
With the score tied 12-12 and six minutes left in regulation, Mark Negrin gave the Salmonbellies the lead with two goals two minutes apart before Brandon Goodwin and Ben Davies sealed the deal with empty-netters in the final minute.
New West erased Coquitlam’s 5-3 first-period lead by outscoring the A’s 7-2 in the second. The two teams then scored 11 goals in the final 15 minutes of the third period.
Goodwin, Negrin and Curtis Dickson all ended up with three goals in the game with Negrin also notching two assists and Goodwin one. The big point producer was Daniel McQuade with seven on two goals and five assists while Kevin Crowley had five points with a goal and four helpers. Jarrett Toll also scored twice with T.J. Cowx notching a goal and two assists.
In the net, starter Neil Tyacke left after the first period following a collision with Coquitlam’s Matt Beers. Brandon Mulligan went the rest of the way.
