Kates kicks butt at Hyack tennis tourney
Second-seeded Justin Kates volleys a return from the baseline in his men's open semi-final match against Justin Guay at the 26th Hyack Open tennis tournament, Saturday at the New Westminster Tennis Club.

Second-seeded Justin Kates, who went on to get a law degree from the University of Western Ontario after completing a tennis scholarship at the University of Michigan, defeated fourth-seeded Gauhar Raina 6-7, 6-3, 6-2 in the final of the Hyack New Westminster Open tennis tournament Sunday.
Kates defeated Justin Guay 7-5, 6-1 in the semifinals Saturday.
Burnaby’s Jerry Turek teamed with Kris Santoso to win the men’s open doubles by downing Jesse Evans and Goran Zovko 6-2, 6-1. No women’s open categories was contested in the tournament, but top-seeded Wendy Banham won the 4.5 women’s singles by defeating Latonia Lam 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.
