’Bellies barely beat Burrards

The New Westminster Salmonbellies and Maple Ridge Burrards not only played three periods Sunday but they also, seemingly, played three different games.
In the first 20 minutes, the ’Bellies outscored the hometown Burrards 8-2. In the second, it was Maple Ridge getting seven goals to New West's one for a 9-9 tie.
The final frame, however, was tightly contested with the Salmonbellies emerging with a 12-11 victory to put them into a first-place tie with Victoria heading into Western Lacrosse League action Wednesday. While both teams have 24 points, the Shamrocks (12-3-0), however, have played one fewer game than the Salmonbellies (11-3-2).
Scott Stewart, named the WLA player of the week for the week ending July 12, continued to hold the hot stick scoring three times and also chipping in an assist. Jordan McBride had two goals and four assists while Ilija Gajic and Cliff Smith connected for two goals and three assists. Martin Cumming also had two goals while Jamie Floris had a goal and an assist for New West.
The ’Bellies were in Langley to play the Thunder with a chance to clinch at least second place and home-floor advantage in the WLA semifinals. Langley (9-5-1) is on a six-game win streak, including two over Victoria, with the Thunder's last loss coming at the hands of the Salmonbellies in Langley on June 17 (11-9).
New West's final game of the season will be against the Burnaby Lakers at Queen's Park Arena next Thursday (June 30).
