’Bellies, Lakers advance to semis

The New Westminster Junior Salmonbellies chopped down the Nanaimo Timbermen 17-5 in Nanaimo on Sunday, to win their best of three BC Junior A Lacrosse League semi-final in two straight.
A rough-and-tumble first period ended with the teams deadlocked at three. But the Salmonbellies lost in the penalty box, as three of their players—Tyler Digby, Leif Mydske and TJ Cowx—were ejected with game misconducts. Two Timbermen were also ejected.
The Salmonbellies took control of the game early in the second, with two unanswered goals by Curtis Dickson. They never looked back, storming the Timbermen 12-2 in the third.
Kevin Crowley led the Salmonbellies with a goal and five assists, while Mark Negrin scored twice and added three helpers. Dickson and Jordan Catton each scored hat tricks.
In Saturday’s series’ opener, at Queen’s Park Arena, the Salmonbellies spotted the Timbermen a 1-0 lead before turning their opponents to pulp, 20-6.
The ‘bellies responded to Kyle Hofer’s goal with five of their own and they led after the first period, 8-4.
Crowley led the assault with four goals while Cowx, Mydske and Daniel McQuade each contributed six points.
The Salmonbellies will now play the Victoria Shamrocks in the best-of-five semifinal, beginning Saturday at Bear Mountain Arena.
In the other semifinal, the Burnaby Lakers opened their series against the Coquitlam Adanacs on Wednesday at the Coquitlam Sports Centre. The Lakers advanced by sweeping the Delta Islanders in two straight games in their best-of-three quarter final with an 11-7 victory at the Ladner Arena on Saturday.
