The New Westminster Junior Salmonbellies open their best-of-three BC Junior A Lacrosse playoff series against Nanaimo on Saturday at Queen’s Park Arena. The series will be a rematch of last year’s quarterfinals, when the ‘bellies beat the Timbermen, three games to one.
The Salmonbellies finished the regular season in third place with 13 wins, seven losses and one tie, for 27 points, while the Timbermen had 16 points from eight wins and 13 losses.
While the Salmonbellies have been resting since last Thursday, when they crushed Langley 18-6 at the Langley Events Centre, the Timbermen had to chop their way into the post-season with an 11-10 nailbiter over the Port Coquitlam Saints, eliminating their rivals from playoff contention. They then had a chance to move up in the standings to fifth had they won their last game of the season against Burnaby on Sunday. But the Timbermen fell to the Lakers, 11-10, in overtime.
Game time Saturday is 5 p.m. Game two will be played in Nanaimo on Sunday, also a 5 p.m. start. If game three is necessary it will be played at Queen’s Park Arena on Tuesday night, at 7 p.m.
The Burnaby Lakers opened the BCJALL playoffs Tuesday with an 11-6 win over the Delta Islanders, at the Bill Copeland Arena.
Runner Riley Loewen led the Lakers with five goals, while Nick Bilic added a pair. That series continues Saturday in Delta.
