’Bellies to honour soldiers

The New Westminster senior Salmonbellies are saluting the soldiers of the Royal Westminster Regiment and Canadian Armed Forces with a Seats for Soldiers military appreciation night July 16.

Anyone with an association to the military, including cadets, legion members, military association members and their families, will be admitted free to the game, which features the ’Bellies taking on the Victoria Shamrocks at Queen’s Park Arena.

Members of the military are invited to dress in uniforms, legion or regimental blazers complete with medals.

Last fall, the Salmonbellies packaged up sticks, balls, jerseys and assorted other lacrosse gear and shipped it to Kandahar for the military to play with in the soldiers’ spare time.

The gesture was spurred by a soldier who went to a Salmonbellies game when on leave, bought a T-shirt and started wearing it back in Afghanistan. He also started communicating with the Salmonbellies during their run to the Mann Cup and president Dan Richardson decided his support should be rewarded.

Pre-game activities July 16 start at 6 p.m. and include a military display expo, featuring vehicles, equipment and weapons. There will also be a Mr. Mikes barbecue and a beverage garden.

Brigadier Gen. M.P. Jorgensen, commander of land forces western area, will be part of the ceremonial face off.

Game intermissions will feature military band entertainment, giveaways and fundraising activities to support the Military Family Resource Centre and The Royal Westminster Regiment Fund.

Doors open at 6:45 p.m. and game start is scheduled for 7:55 p.m.
