Late charge by Salmonbellies successful

The New Westminster Salmonbellies escaped with a 9-7 Western Lacrosse Association victory over the flailing Burnaby Lakers at Bill Copeland Arena last Friday.
The Salmonbellies scored five unanswered goals in the third period, including four in the final 3:04 of the frame to overcome Burnaby leads of 4-1 after the first period and 7-4 following the second.
New Westminster stormed Burnaby goalie Andrew Leyshon with 22 shots in the third period, and outshot the Lakers 51-33 overall.
Trailing 7-5 in the final four minutes, Cliff Smith and Scott Stewart scored 24 seconds apart to tie the game. Kyle Ross got the winner less than a minute later with 1:46 left and then assisted on an insurance goal by Kyle Ross, his second of the game, with 35 seconds remaining.
Mark Scherman and Tom Johnson both scored twice for Burnaby with singles going to Scott Janssen, Jim Southall and Mark Hodsdon.
With the win, the ’Bellies moved into second place with a 7-3-1 record, a point ahead of the Coquitlam Adanacs, who have played one fewer game than New West. They will play each other tonight (Thursday) at Queen’s Park Arena (7:45).
Burnaby remains in the cellar with a 1-8-1 record. The first-place Victoria Shamrocks (9-1-0) will be at Copeland tomorrow, 7:45 p.m. The Lakers will be in Nanaimo to take on the Timbermen (2-7-1) Saturday.
