SPORTS BRIEFS: Boiko takes tennis title

Katerina Boiko of Burnaby downed Vivian Tsui of Port Moody 6-1, 6-2 to capture the women’s open division at the Delta Open at Sunshine Hills tennis tournament last Sunday.
Boiko 13, did not drop a set in any of her four matches. The next event in Tennis BC’s summer series is the Burnaby Open which began today (Saturday) and will continue until July 5 at the Burnaby Tennis Club, Kensington Avenue and Sprott Street.
Mountain softballer to play for Canada
Shanice Ketting-Olivier, who just completed Grade 11 at Burnaby Mountain secondary, has been picked by Softball Canada for its national under-16 girls team that will compete at the Youth World Cup in Prague Aug. 10 to 16.
In addition to attending Burnaby Mountain, Ketting-Olivier is also part of Simon Fraser University’s softball academy, a program run in conjunction with the Burnaby school district.
Bby wins bid for Cdn ringette championship
Burnaby has won the bid to be the host for the 2012 Canadian ringette championships to be held April 8 to 14 at Bill Copeland Arena and Canlan 8-Rinks.
According to Tourism Burnaby, the championship is expected to bring in 800 visitors to the city. It also forecasts the economic impact for Burnaby will be $1.1 million.
The bid was made in conjunction with the Burnaby/New Westminster Ringette Association.
“It has been 12 years since the Canadian championships have been held in British Columbia,” said Eric Holmberg, a member of the association’s executive committee. “Winning this bid will raise the profile for the ringette sport among British Columbians and in doing so, get more youth active and excited about the sport.”
Bowlers do well
Reggie Cubangbang of Burnaby along with New Westminster’s Neil Adamos and Mike Parado were on the men’s team that won the B.C. Tenpin Federation’s annual tournament in Surrey last weekend.
Burnaby’s Ricky To was second in the men’s team event. He also won the men’s all-events handicap division and was third in mixed trios. Another Burnaby bowler, Derilyn Plante, was on the winning women’s team. Ray Pak of New West came in second in men’s doubles.
